The "It" Crowd at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia

When Fashion Week hits, Stylists, Bloggers, Writers, Fashion Editors and Buyers flock to appreciate the country's emerging and established fashion designers upcoming collections, and it is our duty to represent these creative minds on the streets by giving them the justice of incorporating their pieces into our outfits. This years Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia has proven that us Australians are a force to be reckoned with in terms of street style and fashion design, so here are my favourite street style photographs from last week:

Zambesi's eerie end to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia ended low-key with a clean, crisp collection from Zambesi. The balance of light and dark and themes of openness and restraint throughout the collection revealed itself through a mix of wooden nudes, sheer green plaid, black and white and sneaky cuts in the clothes. Whether it was womenswear or menswear, the clothing is designed for the mentally strong and future fashion enthusiast. The Theatre proved to be the perfect venue for the show, as the solidity of the concrete surroundings emphasized the strength of the collection. Overall, the show and collection ended the week strategically, giving us a look into the skill and talent of New Zealand's fashion scene.

Vanishing Elephant in an Industrial Wilderness

In the depths of the industrial Australian Technology Park, Vanishing Elephant unleashed their Spring/Summer 2013/14 collection to a vibrantly mixed fashion crowd, led by Australian supermodel, Julia Nobis. A collection inspired by the impact of repetitive patterns and the structure of industry, the collection complemented the highly manufactured setting of Australian Technology Park yet still separating itself with its tailored elements, cleverly placed paneled patterns and mild contrasting colour palette. The range of patterns against plains, including polka dots and blocky stripes against stark whites and somber blues with hints of orange, khaki and navy are heavily influenced by the cleanliness of Scandinavian fashion, and its respectable that the designers to bring this to the attention of the Australian fashion crowd. Vanishing Elephant, with the help of Mark Vassallo, has successfully achieved in producing a collection that suits the post-punk revival of the fashion forward youth.

Raffles' Dark Turn at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia

Raffles College of Design and Commerce has continually impressed the fashion forward crowd since their inception into the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week line-up and has once again done so. This year, Gabriel Lee, Nara, Aurelia Santoso, XU's, Diyana Kosso and Aquintic showed off their Spring/Summer 2013/14 collections, featuring Australian supermodel Samantha Harris. Of the designers, Gabriel Lee, Aurelia Santoso and Diyana Kosso stole the show. Gabriel Lee's monochromatic geometric patterns and crisp white sheer proved us wrong that this trend is dying, Gabriel successfully retaining its wearability. Aurelia Santoso's collection darkened the mood with architectural, hard-edged minimalist silk ensembles taking over the runway, which were surprisingly feminine. Finally, Diyana Kosso's chiffon and lace abundant collection revealed a sultry yet demure female character, enhanced by the interesting cuts that flourished throughout the collection. Raffles has no doubt set the standard high for other fashion design colleges, it will be interesting to see what these young designers will produce in the future. A nod to the wonderful Creative Direction of Christopher McLaren from A Series of Fortunate Events and Crystal Tsoi!

Jayson Brunsdon's Walk in the Dark

A collection that exudes both classical elegance and structural sturdiness is hard to come by, but Jayson Brunsdon has managed to create one that succesfully does so. Jayson Brunsdon's Spring/Summer 2013/14 collection has allowed crystalline beauty to fuse with the geometric shapes of modern minimalism. This fusion gives birth to a mysterious, yet undeniably relevant collection to the woman of the future. Amongst the melancholic quietness of Phillip Glass's piano pieces, the collection completely shatters this with the crisp whites, powerful reds and glowing glimmer of crystals which captured our eyes. Overall, the masterpiece that is Jayson Brunsdon's Spring/Summer 2013/14 collection is an embodiment of a woman's loveliness and complexity.

Aurelio Costarella's Goddesses at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia

Day 1 of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia has kicked off, and Aurelio Costarella has enthralled us all with an ethereal, visually captivating and sensory fashion installation. His influences, including visual arts, music, and architecture flow throughout the collection and the installation itself, featuring complementing artworks by Waldemar Kolbusz and an eerily beautiful performance by Grace Woodroofe. The collection is a representation of women at both their strongest and most vulnerable, with the artworks a testament to the changing characters of a woman and styles of a woman, whether it be playsuit, dress or gown. Overall, the Grecian elegance that exuded from the collection was finished with the dominating Poseidon corset and dress (pictured below) - a symbol of the powerful woman who is most prevalent today.
