The Digital World of Christopher Kane

There seems to be a trend emerging from the menswear designers of the British Isles - Digital. The famed designer and former Versus Creative Director, Christopher Kane, has joined on the bandwagon, but again has made that trend his own. Ignore the grid and kaleidoscopic prints which so many designers have opted to trickle into their collections and go for the digital portraiture of Christopher Kane!

The abundance of underlaying black on the garments make the perfect canvas for triangular and curvaceous lines to form into eerie faces that stare at passersby. Portraiture may be the outstanding characteristic of the prints, but one must be set aback by the other motif - mist. These pieces within the collection encompass space-dream prints that are a combination of the technological and organic, further enhancing the biological aspects of the print, and may be a comment on the rapid fusion of man and machine, especially in this age.

Central St. Martin's New Project

You're not the first to be confused by this magazine cover, but this magazine is actually the new project from the intimidating and world-renowned Central St Martins College of Arts & Design. If you don't know of Central St. Martins, the college has given birth to the highly successful fashion design careers of the late Alexander McQueen, controversial John Galliano, Céline's Phoebe Philo, and my personal favourites, British designer Christopher Kane and the rebellious Givenchy Creative Director, Riccardo Tisci.

It was only a matter of time before the highly skilled and talented students of the prestigious college would start a publication, especially with the expansion of journalism into the digital world, as most things have, and the opening of rival college, The Condé Nast College. The magazine, called "1 Granary", will be covering fashion, art & design, and is yet to be released. But, the blog has already been established, offering us jealous types to peer into the college and the students' collective interests.

Condé Nast's new College of Fashion & Design

Condé Nast manages some of the world's leading fashion publications, and their most well-known title, Vogue, has opened the doors of their College of Fashion & Design. The London college has been praised worldwide by Editors and Fashion Bloggers alike, and no wonder, as this opens up many opportunities for fashion focused people to be taught by comrades of the Fashion Bible. Industry greats such as British designer, Sir Paul Smith, is one of the many mentors to lend his knowledge of the fashion world to students.

What's interesting about the college is that it is just up the road from one of the world's most prestiguous fashion colleges - Central St. Martins. With alumni from this illustrious college including Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane and the late visionary designer Alexander McQueen, there's a question about what great skilled Designers, Editors, Stylists and the like will come out from Condé Nast. The college is only new, thus offering two courses (more details below), but since Vogue has been experiencing a brand extension, including the Vogue Festival, it's a guarantee that more courses will be on offer in the near future. If you want to know the in's and outs of the fashion world, it's highly recommended that you attend Vogue's first college, it's worth the designer price tag.

It's been a busy two months for me, but now it's time for me to get back into blogging and writing! A lot has happened in the fashion world since I've been away from the blogosphere - Nicolas Ghesquire leaving Balenciaga, Alexander Wang becoming the new Creative Director of Balenciaga, Yoko Ono releasing a line in collaboration with Opening Ceremony, Christopher Kane leaving Versus, The Little Black Jacket exhibition (here in Sydney too), the release of the Maison Martin Margiela x H&M line, the new campaign for Chanel No. 5 featuring Brad Pitt was released, Saskia De Braw cast as the face of menswear for Saint Laurent Paris, Gaspard Ulliel cast as Yves Saint Laurent in an upcoming biopic and Nicola Formichetti announcing that the upcoming issue of Vogue Hommes Japan will be the last... just to name a few haha!

Whilst I've been busy at college, I visited the Little Black Jacket exhibition, which I will blog about later, and finally, I had an interview for a journalism internship for Harper's Bazaar Australia! Unfortunately, I didn't get the internship but Clare (Fashion Features Editor) mentioned that I was one of the last two, which is an incredible achievement. I wish the other candidate all the best! I won't give up :)

Preen Spring/Summer 2013

Patterned sheer dresses, clever panelling, mismatched python prints and a reserved colour palette is what Preen's collection was all about.

Christopher Raeburn Spring/Summer 2013

Christopher Raeburn proves to us that Sports Luxe is once again going to be a chic trend for this coming Spring/Summer season, with the crossover of the bright red shade which was popular amongst menswear and womenswear collections for Autumn/Winter into the hotter months.

David Koma Spring/Summer 2013

David Koma manages to fuse both meshing and sheer panels with a bubbly colour palette for the coming season.

Christopher Kane Spring/Summer 2013

Christopher Kane's latest collection looks more delectable than wearable, with the pastel candy colours and smooth choice of materials delighting one's sense of sight and surprisingly, taste. Christopher moved away from the emerging trend of meshing and relied on folding the material on the garments to create layers, thus giving the garments more dimension and intrigue. The setting complemented the boxy yet feminine silhouettes, the runway glistening and reflecting the colours of the garments, adding to the sensory experience of both the show and the garments in the collection.

Burberry Prorsum invite for the Spring/Summer 2013 show

Burberry have grasped onto the metallic trend and have made it their own, adding that touch of elegance to what may be considered a more urban or even tacky trend. By pairing metallic piece such button ups for men with a perfectly tailored suit, or a metallic swimsuit with a classy white cape, Burberry Prorsum have alleviated the restriction of metallic for purely comical purposes and made it a trend to forego for the upcoming Spring/Summer season.

Richard Nicoll Spring/Summer 2013

Richard Nicoll's collection is as delicate as the women wearing them, with dresses cling to the body, relying only on a few spaghetti straps, light mint coloured knits and airy mesh tops and skirts appealing to a woman who wants to be bold and minimal at the same time.

Simone Rocha Spring/Summer 2013

Simone Rocha is a name known amongst those in the fashion industry, and is fast becoming a household name, with their functional yet fashionable garments appealing to many women in Britain and worldwide. Simone's latest collection encompasses all the latest trends - neon, metallic, mesh and vinyl, but adds a conservative twist on these daring details. A woman can channel modern conservative style with the full body mesh dress, a metallic top and mid-length skirt, a light mesh knit shirt with a vinyl skirt, or - the most daring of the looks - a 60s style neon lace top and mid length skirt and a perspex bag.

Vogue's 120th Anniversary

Lady Gaga bares her face for the biggest September issue of Vogue

September is the most eventful month for Fashion in the calendar, with the change of seasons comes the New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks - giving a chance for establishing and prolific designers to showcase their Spring/Summer collections to fashion media worldwide. Along with the shows, fashion publications are expected to market the new season, with Oyster releasing their 100th issue and Vogue Hommes Japan's most anticipated issue set for release later in the month. But, there is no better opportunity for Vogue to release their largest ever issue during their 120th year in the industry. In celebration of the anniversary, designers and their muses have been featured in a breathtaking editorial in the issue.
