Givenchy: Neon Camo Overload

Riccardo Tisci's injection of undeniably rebellious designs have turned Givenchy on its head, and his talent and skill is commendable, but this collection particularly is a hit and miss. The Pre-Spring/Summer collection for 2014 encompasses an abundance of neon camouflage, gender-illuding florals and symbolic fire prints, which overpower the wonderful tailoring of the collection and the fact that this is the first Pre-season Givenchy menswear collection that features the man-bag.

To the Tisci loyalist, this collection is a wonderment, albeit this is more extreme than previous collections, but to people who are new to his eccentricity may be intimidated by this collection. Riccardo usually sets trends, but with this collection, it seems he has been reactive, twisting the much seen trends of camouflage and floral prints for men by using much vibrant colours and applying it to the slim-line yet sometimes obscure silhouette he is known for. There is much more to this designer, and many know it, we'll just have to see what's next for Mr. Tisci.

Dior's Frontier Cruise Collection

Monaco paved way for the historically modern Dior to unleash their Resort/Pre-Spring/Summer 2013/14 collection in a Bauhaus-inspired setting to wide critical acclaim, yet keeping the event relatively low-key. The dreariness of the Monaco weather surprisingly highlighted the bright modernity of the collection, and making Raf's first use of lace within a Dior collection much more apparent. 

Classic Dior combinations of bright with neutral was a given, but the appearance of gradient neon accessories was a sign of Raf Simons' influence. A hybrid of the "New Look" skirt and structured pants would've no doubt caught the attention of many who attended, followed by the collared crop tops, which will surely be trickled down to youth fashion.

Metallics, sheer and of course, lace, appeared throughout the collection, and in clashes. Clashing lace with shapely panels of a multitude of colours in simplistic dresses once again presented Raf's ability to make simple garments much more dynamic. Bent heels on scarpins, luscious silk ensembles and masculine sunglasses created more depth in what would be a potential brush-off collection. Overall, Raf showed an exploration of the possibilities of bringing a more non-prejudice approach to fashion, which is completely relevant to the modern society's ethos.

On a Cruise or in a Resort?

The Spring/Summer season of fashion weeks in London, Milan, and Paris are amongst us, and the anticipation within the fashion industry is undeniable. As always, designers and labels release Pre-Spring/Summer collections (or they may be called Cruise or Resort collections), as an insight into what to expect in their Spring/Summer collection.

Gucci Resort 2013

Unconventional florals will always win me over, and Gucci has delivered just that. I notice that the floral prints focus more on the leaves and stems of the flowers, with the flowers being more an accent or pop of colour within the garment. The prints match the '70s feel, conveying a sense of simple glam.

Just Cavalli Pre-Spring 2013

The father of animal print has also reinforced my love for unconventional florals, by creating psychedelically edited floral prints and toning them down by pairing the printed garments with basics. I can't deny that this collection and the garments may be an aquired taste, but statement street wear is what I love to wear, and there hasn't been a collection for women lately that has proved statement street wear is a better option over classic tailoring and conventional fast fashion in Spring/Summer, but this one has.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Pre-Spring 2013

Currently one of the most desired models, Bambi Northwood-Blyth, is the muse for Marc Jacobs' current Pre -Spring/Summer collection. The rebellious lookbook screams for change in women's fashion by embracing one's eccentricities and uniqueness by literally pairing clashing garment designs within the same colour palette, which almost disguises its casualness. Finally, a collection for women confidently bringing back camo!

Givenchy Cruise 2013

The prints, the prints, the prints! The clash between geometric patterns and mystical Hindu-inspired paisley is a treat to my eyes. What I love most about Riccardo Tisci's Pre-Spring collection for this season is the fact that he has brought back long dresses in summer with cut sleeves. Givenchy's statement print trousers, I predict, will be in high demand when it's available for purchase, as well as the beautiful alien-esque belts wrapped around the models in the lookbook.

Dion Lee Resort 2013

My favourite Pre-Spring collection has been presented by one of Australia's most valuable exports in the fashion industry, Dion Lee. This man has designed the perfect combination between the opposing themes of aquatic and electric - with shark spine inspired neoprene blazers, subtle metallic wire graphic dresses and skirts, pops of neon and elegant silhouettes. This collection is simply a beautiful juxtaposition.
